The Malayalam script is one of the most beautiful writing systems in India. It belongs to the Brahmic family of scripts — the same tradition as Devanagari (Hindi), Tamil and Kannada — which means it follows a consistent phonetic logic. Once you understand that logic, learning the alphabet becomes a structured process rather than an overwhelming task.
The Structure of the Malayalam Alphabet
The Malayalam alphabet (akshara mala) has 52 characters in the traditional classification. These divide into:
Swarangal (Vowels)
Independent letter forms that carry their own sound. They can start a word or appear as vowel markers on consonants.
Vyanjanangal (Consonants)
Consonant characters that all carry an inherent 'a' sound. Modified by vowel markers to produce other vowel sounds.
Chillu Letters
Pure consonant forms with no vowel sound, appearing at the end of syllables. Unique to Malayalam among major Indian scripts.
The 16 Malayalam Vowels
Malayalam has 8 pairs of short and long vowels. Short vowels are held for one count; long vowels for two counts. This distinction changes meaning — "kalam" (pen) uses a short 'a', while "kaalam" (time/era) uses a long 'aa'.
The 36 Consonants — Organised by Pronunciation Group
The 36 consonants are arranged into 5 groups based on where in the mouth the sound is produced, plus a row of semi-vowels and sibilants. Learning by group is faster than learning alphabetically.
Velar (throat)
Palatal (middle palate)
Retroflex (curled tongue)
Dental (behind teeth)
Labial (lips)
Semi-vowels & sibilants
Chillu Letters — Malayalam's Unique Feature
Chillu (pure consonant) letters appear at the end of words and syllables, carrying no vowel sound at all. There are 5 primary chillu letters:
